Issu de la civilisation arabe, élaboré dans quelque communauté du Proche-Orient, il fut amélioré dans la péninsule ibérique occupée, puis de là passa en Vénétie, en Ligurie, en Provence."

The origins of "soap" lie somewhere along the Mediterranean Sea coast. It is hard to say exactly what processes or ingredients were used in making the first soap, nor can soap making be traced back to remote antiquity. In fact neither the Greeks, the Romans nor the Egyptians used a cooked paste to wash fabrics or their bodies. Soap's long story most probably begins in the Dark Ages. Originating in the Arab culture and then developed in several of the Near East communities, it was improved on the occupied Iberian Peninsula, and from there it made its way to Venice, Liguria and Provence.
